Note: For female members of the class use Mary (แมรี่) and the appropriate pronouns and particles instead of John. If the instructor is female, มะลิ may be used instead of ประภาส with appropriate changes.
Notes on the dialog
ชื่อ means 'name' or 'to be named' but refers only to the first or given name.
นามสกุล means 'family or last name'.
ขอโทษ means 'excuse me' or 'pardon me' and is used in the same way as the English words.
กรุณา means 'please, kindly...' and is followed by a request form.
อีกที 'again' means literally 'an additional time'.
คุณ is a polite title that may be used with names of either sex. It is normally put before a person's given name, since that is the name that one is usually addressed by in Thailand. คุณอารี 'Miss Aree', คุณถาวร 'Mr. Thaworn', คุณนงคราญ 'Mrs. Nongkran' คุณ may be placed before the family names of foreigners, thus คุณบราวน์ 'Mr. Brown'.

The word อะไร 'what?' occupies the same position in the sentence as the word it refers to.

ใช่ไหม
When ใช่ไหม is added to a statement, it becomes a question. It is used when the speaker is seeking confirmation of something. It is very similar in usage to หรือ (see หรือ) which it can replace in many situations.

If one wishes to disagree with a question with ชื่อ and give additional information, it can be done in either of the following ways:

Observe that ไม่ใช่ can occur before a name (a noun) but not before ชื่อ (a verb), ไม่ได้ must be used before ชื่อ.
หรือ
Questions ending with หรือ are normally answered affirmatively with ครับ, which indicates that what the speaker assumed to be true is indeed true.

The usual negative response to questions with หรือ is ไม่ใช่, thus:
